Overview

Sámuel Szilágyi is an assistant research fellow at the Horticultural Institute, Research Centre for Fruit Growing.

His research focuses on Prunus species, mainly sweet and sour cherries. His expertise lies in the assessment of plant genetic resources using traditional methods for morphological and phenological characterization, as well as molecular techniques.

His work contributes to answering questions like how various traits, e.g. fruit size or flowering time can be determined using molecular markers, to be able to evaluate seedling populations at an early stage in breeding programs.

Across his research, he uses international descriptors to characterize fruit morphological properties and assess phenological stages of fruit tree accessions and cultivars maintained at the germplasm collection of the Research Centre for Fruit Growing. He evaluates molecular markers associated with important traits for their practical utilization and markers for cultivar identification.

He authored and co-authored five research articles in high-impact scientific journals.
