Dr. Tibor Farkas - MATE Research
Overview
Dr. Tibor Farkas is a chair of the Department of Rural and Regional Development at MATE and the head of the Rural development engineering MSC programme.
His research focuses on rural development, rural sociology and rural demographics. His main research area is the study of the development potential of rural settlements. The most common research method is data collection through village research camps. The main research question in these studies is the role of social capital in development and the relationship between the strength of social capital and development. The village research camps in Hungary and Romania contribute to the development of the respective villages and the strengthening of the local society.
Dr. Tibor Farkas has won several research grants and led several of them in the past decades. He has also participated in international projects and in several EU projects and their evaluation.

1. Livelihood strategies of the Moldavian Csango communities (OTKA 1997-2000)
The main research objective of the research "Livelihood strategies of the Moldavian Csángó communities" was to analyse the life strategies of the Moldavian Csango communities in Romania. The research showed that in the 1990s a process of re-peasantation was observed in these communities.
2. Social assessment of thermo-decomposition technologies (TÁMOP-4.2.2.A-11/1/KONV-2012-0015 2012-2014)
The project investigated the social impact and acceptance of different thermo-decomposition technologies. It has been found that there are community and communications methods that can help the uptake of these technologies.
3. The Situation of Garden Plots And The Success Of The Garden Plots Programme (MATE 2023)
This programme examined the situation of garden plots, including the changing functions of them and the emergence of new functions such as property speculation.
