Overview

Dr. Eszter Tormáné Kovács's research projects are related to the socio-economic aspects of nature conservation and nature friendly farming, covering a wide range of topics including the assessment of ecosystem services at different scales, analysis of conservation conflicts and using participatory methods. She has a 10-year experience in conservation policy as well.

Dr. Zsolt Zalán is a senior research fellow at the Department of Bioengineering and Alcoholic Drink Technology, in the Institute of Food Science and Technology of MATE. 

His research focuses on lactic acid bacteria from a food safety and food development perspective. His expertise lies in food microbiology, biotechnology and fermentation. 

Zsolt Zalán's work contributes to questions of how lactic acid bacteria can be used to make food healthier, more sustainable, natural and safe. Across his research, he uses microbiological and specific fermentation and biotechnological methods. 

His theoretical work examines how to use biotechnology to create value-added foods that retain their natural qualities without compromising their safety, nutritional value, or taste. His empirical work has assessed these theories in settings ranging from in the development of functional probiotic products to the mycotoxin detoxification  

Across his research, he uses microbiological and specific fermentation and biotechnological methods. 

He made contributions in the field of plant-based, lactic acid fermented juices and in the field of biological mold inhibition and mycotoxin removal. 

He authored and co-authored 72 research articles in high-impact scientific journals. 

Zsolt Zalán has collaborated with several research groups in the Czech Republic, Belgium, and China and he has successfully applied for a number research grants nationally and internationally.

Sustainable Nature Conservation on Natura 2000 sites” project WP3.2. „Professional/public consultation on management proposals”

In WP3.2. the management planning at 12 Natura 2000 sites in the Kiskunság and Mátra regions were facilitated using participatory methods. Interviews were conducted with stakeholders and analysed using qualitative content analysis. The results assisted the moderated consultation forums which were organized in close cooperation with the planners.

BESAFE: Biodiversity and ecosystem services: Arguments for our future environment

The general aim of BESAFE is to improve our understanding of the alternative ways in which concepts for the ’value of biodiversity’ can be used to improve biodiversity policy making and governance at local, national and European to global scales. Hungarian researchers contribured with content analysis of policy documents and Q-analysis among policy actors.

BioBio “Indicators for Biodiversity in Organic and Low Input Farming Systems

The main objective of the project was to explore and test biodiversity indicators for organic and conventional farming. The Hungarian social science research team coordinated the multi-country comparative assessment of the perceptions of organic and conventional farmers' on biodiversity and the associated values.
