The second thematic workshop of the Research Excellence Programme (REP)

On Friday, 17 November 2023, the second thematic workshop of the Research Excellence Programme was held on the topic of research funding, this time online. 

The workshop was opened by Dr. Zoltán Kovács, Rector's representative for Science Strategy, Head of the Research Excellence Programme, and moderated by Flóra Vitális, Science Strategy Analyst. The opening was followed by plenary presentations on international research funding and then on applications at MATE.  

The first major session of the workshop aimed to provide an overview of what is required for the success of different types of proposals, what aspects to focus on when applying for funding, and how applicants can develop an effective strategy for successful international funding. The participants heard all this from Dr. Barna Kovács, Secretary General of BioEast, agricultural diplomat and Dr. Borbála Schenk, Head of the International Department of the National Research, Development and Innovation Office (NKFIH).  

In the second session, Dr. László Nagy, Director and Mónika Kocsis-Kiss, Head of Department of the University's Directorate of Tender Management and Innovation Management informed about the MATE's application opportunities. 

The lunch break was followed by a round table discussion on Researchers' pathways to successful applications. MATE colleagues Dr. Veronika Halas (ÉTI), Dr. Lajos Helyes (KERTI), Dr. András Székács (KÖTI) and Dr. Zoltán Tóth (NTTI) shared their own examples and experiences of what they believe is necessary for a successful application. The discussion was moderated by Dr. Attila Gere (ÉTTI).  

In the second half of the afternoon, breakout room discussions provided participants with updates on specific proposals and strategic suggestions from researchers who have already successfully applied for a particular proposal. Participants heard about the OTKA Postdoctoral Excellence Programme (OTKA PD) and the Bolyai programmes from Dr. Uros Ljubobratovic (AKI), about the OTKA programmes from Dr. Viktor Markó (NVI) and about the Operational Programmes (GINOP, GINOP Plus, VEKOP) from Dr. Gábor Kalácska (MI).
